Pics of some young shusui who seem to be litter mates. One named for our dear friend

From the pull of the Big Pond, and in no formal order , here are pics of some young shusui who look to me to be litter mates.

The first is named for our dear friend Mr. Rainblood. As I recall Rain missed getting a young shusui that he liked -- and this little guy, #1, resembled said fish. Given his markings, I may have called him "Mr. Rainblood" anyway!

I closed in on one of these shusui in the tub with other keepers, because i don't see him yet in a tub by himself.

I have 1200 photos to go through so hang in. I'm trying to work out presentation order.

Holy cow, Max. That shusui is so clean. The one with the really interesting symmetric beni and the four blue zipper scales between the head and the beni.

Thank you! I love it, too, and our photographer loved it. You may name this fish if you like. And just to say this, I do not know the parents of these young kids. They are product of the Big Pond flock spawn. Parents unknown, chose their own partners and did the dance.

Have a bit of work to do, then more pix later!

Big Pond Pull -- inside the nets. ;)

Here are photos of the pull in progress.

In the first photo, see the fish center top, all that sumi spoiling the dorsal ridge. That was one of the best ki shusui when she was two y.o. This is what "crapping out" looks like in the ki shusui project. And it's why Bindi suggests waiting until four y.o. to breed. She was 3.5 y.o. went into winter beautiful. Then, after the winter, this began.

See the big red fish in the fourth pic? That's what yamanako ohya calls "aKawakaba." (capital K is mine) I think probably he named this type hoping there might be a market, but i do not believe there is. Akawakabas come from the same shusui x midori x ogon cross. I have a few others in the Big.

In the first and second pic is a shusui with very vivid hi. That's Rosey who is possible mother of the F1s. Her markings have hardly changed at all! she is probably seven y.o. She comes from Hosokai and I bought her with two sibs, male and female.
I'll show this fish and other individuals in a bit.

      brb.

      Three of six grandparent oyagoi.

      Team Ki !

I thought now that we have F2, might be time to look at the portraits in my (obnoxiously large ) siggy line. See two shusui girls and the third with hi completely up to the dorsal scales for the whole length of the fish. See also, two doitsu lemon ogons boys and one doitsu midori.

The very hi shusui changed so much since May -- I didn't recognize her yesterday! I may have given her away! The midori got picked off by some large bird or small mammal in year one. One of the ogons didn't make the photos on Paul's camera. So ignoring those three, want to see what two of the grandma shusui and one granddad ogons look like now?

      Okay.
      1. Little Sister - came from same batch, same breeder as Rosey. Check out how her sumi came up and spread.
      Compare with
      2. Rosey - Her hi and zipper are holding strong at 7 yrs old.
      3. Yellow Ogon, Grandpa. IMHO, looking good.

The ki asagi with kado gin and a few other individuals.

      Team Ki!

The objective for this harvest was to reduce the fish load, pan for gold, make room for babies if we want to split up the kids in the Lower Pond after we cull them in May.

Presenting a few of the Big Pond keepers.

      1. - the F1 ki asagi w/ kado gin.

      2. - Stella, now with her pattern breaking up, she's falling into "pet" class. She inspired my love of shusui. Cindy helped me save her from an accident in '09. TY, Cindy!

      3. - akawakaba with blue dorsal scales and some of what Wayne called "boke" or random scales.

      4. - F1 full leather (excuse four scales. ) midori aka what we used to call "mangowakaba."

      5. - "Little Brother" came from Hosokai with Rosey and Little Sister. Rain say he may be kosui. I think he looks like blood sibling to Rosey.

      6. - Doitsu lemon hariwake called "A horse with no name."

      7. A new little home-bred asagi.

      8. Two midoris. The full leather is F1 hatched here and the one with scales came from Japan from Yamanaka Ohya in 2009. He's holding up pretty well!

      9. Ki shusui with asagi markings. Anyone know if this pattern has a name or a meaning?

      10. Last year's fave baby koi a tancho ki shusui - darkening a bit - tubbed with a homebred akawakaba with a brown zip.

      Some tubs of babies, later.
Paul Solovay, Thanks for the great photos!

Sorting the kids, selecting the keepers

We have the pre-k batch, up to about 4"
and we have the school kids 5 - 8" .

Close up of some flock-spawned ki shusui , one with boke scales which will disqualify him next year, one with prospects pictured twice, has kuchi ki and one young ki asagi.

That last little self-invented ki shusui has got some kado gin on his (broken) zipper. I'm going to be watching him.

A few more pix coming later in the day!

Maybe next year you'll make a day trip and see him in person.
Someone brought a paw-paw to the pull on Tues. And so this fish was named.

I was considering asking you about coming North this year but this year my back decided it had other plans for me. All of your parents and babies are amazing, I'm just really partial to Asagi and this one is super-amazing!

Rayjay, thanks for the kind words!

There is a big genetic story behind this F1 ki asagi and the F1s I used for the 2017 spawn. The oyagoi who produced the mother load spawn didn't have the normal-scaled gene -- which is why of the 7,000 kids, there was not one normal-scaled offspring. So, I think we might deduce from that that the F1 ki asagi and the F1 doitsu oyagoi didn't have the same parents even though they came from the same six-fish group 2012 spawn.

I want to get this completely right before I say more. Going to read up on this and get back with some facts.

P.M. me for Mapquest info. Hope your back gives you a break = but I know it's a lonnnnng drive.

P.S. Rayjay, we are pulling the middle pond on Monday, Oct. 16th.
We have some asagi in there from free-style breeding, one is the palest gray ki asagi and maybe has a little shine on the scales.
      Pictures will follow.
      Feel better!
