[QUOTE=kevin32;2617865]how old are the females? amazing how well the
color is holding up on these for ki shusui. I think you told me Japanese don't breEd them because they can fade after 2 years... just trying to learn...
Hi Kevin! Not two years, although some of the siblings of this set did "crap out" at two, and at three, and at four! The parents of these six oyagoi were from Japan. They spawned in my QT in May 2012, so these guys, their offspring, are five years old. I agree about the color. I cannot take my eyes off that yellow girl.

Great to hear! With all 6 being involved, you should get a good mix of the gene pairings. You may not be able to tell which young-uns came from which parents, but it seems like your odds of getting some good ones is increased.

It was quite impressive to see in that clean water. It felt like the very first time...

Yep, whatever works! Most opinions give ideal temperatures or ranges that fall between 64 F (18 C) and 75 F (24 C). Just rarely does someone mention a temperature a little lower or higher than that range. In my ponds I've seen most spawns (accidental and intentional) occur between 64 and 75. But there have also been a couple of accidentals in late March as low as 52 F (11 C).

Matt, this a.m., out at the Big Pond (350,000 gals or so), lotsa splashy-splashy. Air temps same 61F so 30 degrees cooler than 2 days ago! Yesterday, I heard slurping along the shoreline, so there was probably sneaky splashy when I was elsewhere. Apparently, my gang thinks this is the right temp!

It's funny trying to see who among the 150 or so adults in the Big is doing the dance. Always, the splashing is happening across from wherever I'm standing. By the time I get to the waving patch of reeds, the dancers have moved on. But a couple of times I caught them and they are pairing up the way I would do it. Shusui x midori. Shusui x shusui. Gangs of kids drafting along, trying to get the hang of this. Apparently koi life goes on without human interference.

      First FryDay.
Dipped a clear quart bottle into the shallows. Saw daphnia scurrying along bottom of bottle. Then, within the floaty pond refuse and algae, spied a teeny clear fishy with two black eyes.
      Spawn was one week ago.
      Now, Fryday.
