Where does the settlement tank need to be placed and should they be placed in the ground at the same water level as the pond? Also what goes in each tank? I'm wanting to make my own and I already have 3 55 gallon barrel drums to use. Thanks

One gravity flow 55 gal drum settlement tank can hadle the flow of one 3" bottom drain with a flow not to exceed 1800 to 2000 gph. It should be installed at pond level so the tanks won't overflow when the system is shut off.
A floating microscreen of static pre-filter can and should be installed in the settlement tank to increase performance.
You can also install a cone bottom and if the pump is to be above water level a check valve should be installed on the outlet from the tank below water level. I like to place check valves inside the tank for access later if and when it fails. I have installed many above ground pumps without the check valve and that can work also with valves in the right place for priming.
In the first drawing this shows the optional internal layouts. This is for a static pre-filter but a floating microscreen mounts in the same position without the connector.
The second drawing is a typical cleanout configuration for the drain lines.
I want to see them an inch above the mean pond level so when the system shuts off I have a bit of leeway on the top to prevent overflow.
Can you please explain the clean out? It sounds pretty self explanitory but I just don't understand how thee fuction.
Thanks
Xavier
If and WHEN your lines get restricted by whatever over time you can simply open the end and run a cleanout pig or brush or fish through it and clean it!

OK, OK, FISH TAPE.
We do need a fish that you could just send through the line and let it eat it's way through the clog to the other end.
wont most of the settlement still settle in the 3'' pipe coming from the bottom drain

ok thanks, So a 3in pipe would be used from the bottom drain to the settlement tank?
Do you have to use a pump for the bottom drain or is it gravity fed to the settlement tank?
I've posted a diagram is it ok or did i miss it completely? Also the pond is gonna be 12x12 and 3 ft deep.
it depends on size of pond 3'' or 4'' / its gravity fed
most settlements arent in series but parallel
yes I'm planning on making my on settlement tank and yes I was hoping to put the settlement tanks in the ground
If you can't dig deeper go above ground higher.. fish will thank you. More water for better water and a few more fish
