      Goldfish with mouth stuck open

One of my fishy clients just brought me a goldfish that has it's mouth stuck open. I can't tell if there's anything stuck in his mouth or not. Any thing else that could cause this? The client is a newbi and has been trying to get his tank cycled and I'm not really sure how that's going. I've been advising that he test every other day and trying to teach him but my first thought is water quality issue. Is there anything regarding water quality that could cause something like this? I put him in a quarantine tank in really good water with another goldie for company. Not really sure what else to do at this point. If he was a koi I could get a better look in his mouth but he's only about 3 inches long. I don't even think I could get a tweezer in his mouth if I could see something stuck in there.

I've heard of fish dislocating their jaw, maybe search here for that or google? I know there are directions on how to correct it. Usually if it is a rock you can see it, ime. I have long pinky nails and that is the only way I've been able to scoop a rock out.

Malformed jaw is a potential reason. You could use a small eye dropper or one of those blue bulbous thingys for babies to aspirate the mouth.

I've examined his closely now with glasses and a magnifying glass. I can see down his throat but I don't see anything lodged in there. I tried using a small syringe but nothing changed. I think his jaw appears to be broken. I can close it with my finger but he can't seem to. Poor thing. I'm thinking I'm probably going to be putting him down. I'll probably wait and see if good water changes anything but I don't see how it can. Could he have maybe run into a tank decoration or something? The guy had a big piece of driftwood in the tank but no gravel.

Update: This fish is still hanging in there and does now seem to be able to close his mouth but it does look crooked. I'm thinking he somehow broke his jaw. I think as long as he seems fine I won't put him down. Him and his buddy have both perked up considerably. My client is moving so wants me to keep the fish till he moves so i'm going to.

About 35 years ago I had a few GF in an outdoor cattle trough. One of my Orandas tried to eat too big of a grasshopper and got a leg lodged holding his mouth open. Luckily I was able to remove the leg and the Oranda was fine.
