      Dead fish....non emergency. Just questions

DH found one of our 12 inch koi bloated and dead in the pond this morning.
The water has been green for quiet some time so I have no idea if this koi has been sick a while and I couldn't see it or this came on suddenly.

How fast could a koi bloat?

I have noticed that some rocks have been knocked into the pond.
Any possibility that one may have injured this guy?

DH already burried it so I didn't get to inspect.

Water parameters are fine. No ammonia, no nitrites, ph has been a little lower than usual at 7.0 or 7.5 (can't remember now)

I believe I have another koi that is bloated. This one is a larger koi.

What's the possibility of there being a toxic plant or plant parts such as seeds?
I have a Japanese Wisteria beside the pond and although I try to remove all the seed pods I may miss a few. There is also the water iris that puts out seeds.

I went through a series of bloated goldies a few years back. Never did figure out what was causing it. After about 8 of them died there were no more that bloated.

I have no idea how long this fish has been bloated and am having trouble catching her/him.
If possible I plan to make a QT in the greenhouse which will warm the water quiet nicely. Salt and will check on getting Baytril for injections.

I think it happens in the lower 50's (cold water dropsy) if dropsy there will be pineconing...

      Nope.
The BDs do a pretty good job of picking up everything.

My system may not be perfect but I don't consider it nasty. That's one reason I'm suspecting seeds from one of the plants.

I already have 2 koi from last year that appear to have a swim bladder problem. And now the bloated dead one and this other one. Something isn't right somewhere.

How can I have my water tested for heavy metals or other things?
If I suspect a problem with my water will my utility co. test it? (probably couldn't rely on accurate results from them though)

look under water testing lab in the yellow pages, or contact your county extention agent, they can help you find a water test lab if your yellow pages doesn't.

There are somethings you need to think about.
Dropsy is a condition not a disease. Pineconing is a part of the condition. There is always an underlying cause for the dropsy/pineconing. Often it is because the fish is septic from a bacterial infection/kidney damage or some breach in the skin such as an ulcer. When the osmotic regulation is upset you see the scales standing away from the skin.
Honestly, I think you are going down the wrong road with the poison seeds, etc. You may find that to be the cause or heavy metals, but I think you should look else where right now. Get a good scrape and scope on your fish and check for parasites. Make sure your maintenance is up to snuff (water changes, filter cleaning) and correct any abnormalities in your water parameters.
Put the antibiotics and other chemicals away until you know what you are treating.

Sorry, I forgot one other thing. I suspect in TN you are too warm to even consider cold water bloating unless you are alreay in the 30s there.

If you need to test your water (I think everyone should). Check out Koi Lab http://www.koilab.com/a_samples_tests.html

They are located in Georgia. They do tests according to parameters that keep fish healthy. Your county or city won't give you enough detail to help in your fish situation. The website will give you the info to send samples, but you can call Vicky, who runs the lab, to get more info as well. Good luck

That is one approach, but quickly reading the Emergency Sticky posted at the top of this forum may give you something more quickly and just as accurate.........and considerably cheaper.

Wisteria seeds are somewhat toxic to mammals, but I'm not sure if they are toxic to fish as well. They may have nothing to do with your koi's illness, however...

Generally speaking, the dropsy condition is usually caused by allowing the water to slowly become too concentrated with a variety of toxins that compromise fish health. There are two effective ways to stop the condition from my experience. One is massive fresh water changes if the supply water is of high quality. The other is to simply react away the toxins with potassium permaganate dosed at 1 to 2 ppm every day or two until the water stops eating the permanganate and stays clean.

With clean water free of the toxins from my experience the dropsy always disappears. If fish are already swollen with dropsy, this does not cure them, but it stops more fish from having the dropsy condition.
