      Brad's Fry growouts

Well they finally got here. I was traveling to Singapore so had to take a later shipping date, Zac did an execelent job of packing and marking the box. However neither I nor Zac are happy the post office took 2 days to deliver my overnight box.

Anyway, I think the pictures speak for themselves. I have quite a few snaps so it may take me a few posts to get them all up...

Okay, now in their new home. It's a 40g aquarium I setup in my home office. The have a chocolate plecos and bakers dozen neon tetras for tank mates.

why did it take 2 days? they issue a standard $100.00 insurance. If they do anything to the box (ex. break it, or arrive late) then they have to pay (don't know if its the sender or receiver) the 100.00 i'd file a report.

The mailman who delivered this morning was very apologetic and also mentioned to file a report. I got the impression that Zac (the sender) would or could file.

Zac: It's up to you to file if you think it's worth your time. The box itself got here in good condition (by shipping standards), but the fish were bruised and delivery was very late. My take is Chagoi and Ochiba bruise pretty easily and it's really just the time issue you could hang a hat on.

the package itself was not damaged, but the items inside were. You paid for overnight, and you should have gotten overnight. either get all the insurance money, free shipping, or pay for two day shipping. i would just get the shipping free, because i think the koi will heal up, but if you don't think, then i'd tell Zac to get the insurance money.

      just me 2 cents.

      Yikes!

It seems I have a tobe (spelling), or maybe two. My bakers dozen neon tetras now count as only five.

My suspects are my one Chagoi, about 5", or the largest Ochiba, about 4", or maybe both of them.

I don't care about loosing the neons, but am wondering why breeders cull the tobes? Is it because they are eating Koi that may become GCs? Or is this a sign the tobe is too aggressive or somehow undesirable?

I've been feeding a pretty good 4 finger pinch of blood worms 3 times a day, dawn, lunch, and dusk. I'm now wondering if I shouldn't feed more often?

      Any thoughts or comments guys?

I believe this is the normal scheme of things, and not really to do with Tobi'ism. Neons are relatively slower moving and at night, their "slight" fluoresent make them look like moving food to the koi. And in the confined space, it becomes easy for the koi's to "suck" them in, accidentally or not.

I have had this happening to fantail goldfish coexisting with the kois in small tank also.

Thanks, good to know. Last night when I went to bed (after dusk) I still have 5 neons, this morning at dawn I only have 2. Somebody is eating good...

On a lighter note, to find the culprit, the ones that fluoresce in the next few nights would be your culprit

I think your crystal ball is real clear. Tonight I still have 2... so that confirms it's nocturnal.

My wife was upset at first and asking if I could catch the remainder neons and move to the 10g kitchen tank. I told her it just wasn't worth the effort and to get over it. The clincher was when I said the cost of the neons was less than her startbucks cup of coffee...

As Andres predicted... no more neons.

I was doing a water change and cleaning the rock today when I decided I was being stupid. So I removed the rock. Not as pretty this way, but much more healthy.

So here are a few shots with zero neons and rock-less bottom.

you might think about putting some decorations in there to give them some place to hide.

      just my two cents.

I think you should put some blak or blue construction paper along the back and two side walls to give a little resemblance of a koi pond. I am affraid they may loose color without a darker bakground.

Looking good I will probably bring a couple of mine inside this fall into a planted tank.

Brad, I disagree, putting stuff in there will just make it harder to keep clean. They don't need to hide, you want them to get used to you and others.
Paper on the sides? that will just keep the natural light out, you don't want that.
Blue or black is OK for picture taking but thats all its good for.
Tell you what I like to put on indoor tanks for smmmall fry is mirror plastic or just plan mirrors on only the ends, so that when they do dart around they see a reflection prior to hitting the glass and slow down.
