Everything you ever wanted to know about mud ponds!
I'm sure you've all discussed this before, but being new here thought I'd post it anyway. We all know the benefits of a mud pond for our koi, yet most of us keep our fish in well filtered, clear water, and are always striving to improve on clarity and water quality. I have a feeling we all do this...
Hi, I am new to this site but would love some help with my pond. I have a 60x150 foot natural pond that has indigenous cat fish, shiners and some added large mouth bass and about 20 wonderful koi. It is a very healthy pond that we have a fountain for more decorative purposes than aeration. The pond...
I live in a gated community that has 3 large semi natural ponds. I am guessing the bottom of the pond is clay/dirt/gravel/sand mix. The ponds have all have one large fountain in the center of them. The ponds all had some goldfish in them last year until a water main broke and flooded the ponds...
I started this "dream thread (http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?136808-Dreaming-of-a-larger-pond-help)" over on "Pond Construction and Filtration"; folks there suggested that I should also post mud pond forum. I am building a house near Idyllwild California elevation 4,600ft. USDA...
So I had this great idea hit me yesterday. My wife actually seems open to it which is scary enough as it is. I was originally thinking about a lined pond but then realized that would be difficult and figured it would be easier and hopefully less expensive to do a mud pond. My idea was to build a...

Hello, I'm new here and happy to find a forum on Mud ponds. I'm starting over from a pond crash this summer that was due to too many fish and a 10 year old pond that had silted up. Oh and the drought. Here's my set up: I have been fairly blessed by the Koi Gods in having a small stream run right...
A friend has a mud pond that has fallen on hard times. I am writing on her behalf. The pond was 8 or so feet deep at one time but because of drought and other reasons it has only about 8 to 12 inches of water remaining at the deepest spots. There are some large (18 inch to 36 inch) koi in there...

Hi guys I posted an introduction on the main forum, but will probably spend most of my time here. I have a mud pond here in the UK that I built and extended over the last 5 years. I would have designed it differently if I new then what I know now, as it would be impossible to pull due to the shape...
Hello All, I'm new to the forum... I have a 20x40ft teardrop shaped pond 10ft deep on the wide end and 4ft deep on the narrow end. (How do I attach a picture?) My 16 large koi threw a big party when I was gone and now there are too many babies. The dip net was a waste of time, lol. Before...
At least, I think that's what they were doing? :D They were in the shallow waters around the pondweed, fanning each other and kicking up the bottom and swimming around each other in circles. They were pretty much all involved. They made such a disturbance that it was hard to see if any had...
We have a contract on a house and a little under 3 acres of land in town. MAJOR fixer-upper, inside and out! Need advice for outside. There is a natural creek that runs through the property. It looks like someone previously attempted to turn it into a pond. In the overhead pic of property...

I'm new to this, so I think what I have is classified as a mud pond. It's oval. 160 feet long and 60 feet wide. About 8 feet deep in the middle. It started out almost completely surrounded by trees, smelly, and covered in weed thick enough that you thought you could walk over it. I got it...
As I'm a new member here I thought I would share our pond and experiances with you through its various stages to the current day. We bought our house back in 2006 and it came with the pond at the top of the garden. We did not do much with the pond the first year as we were busy with other things...
Hi everybody! I am working on a mud pond in Ecuador for tilapia and have to make a choice between 2 options. You can see on the design 2 individual ponds (on a slope), connected with an overflow. Now all the sides are mud but I would like to make a more esthetical rock wall between the two ponds...
I've been waiting eight months to post this thread. Last March, 2009, this mud pond was dug in good clay soil. We didn't have a spring as a water source in or near the new pond. Instead we planned to draw water off a spring-fed brook that came from a field above me. We put in a bottom drain,...

Hi, when we bought our home a few years back it came with a mud pond. Like many other I want to try and find ways to improve water clarity but to this day I have not found a system that seems to work. Of course I don't expect crystal clear water but it would be nice to be able to see 40 to 50 cm...
Newbie to the forum and new to ponds and koi. Great site and I'm overwelmed by the informaton here. Been working on my mud pond for the last 2 years but, most of the real work done this year, last year was mostly exploration and learning about what my puddle did through the seasons. Done lots of...
guys i have been wondering, I have a pump thats generating a current 24/7 that keeps my kois busy swimming against it in my pond, my question is,is it humane to have them swimming all their lives against a current? or is it even advisable to have a current in a mudpond? or should I have intervals...
I want to build a pond thats 14ft by 7 ft by 6ft deep. Can I do it with clay?
Hello everyone! I have a question that I'd consider as a sticky. What on earth (literally) is a "mud pond"? Most of us from looking at the pictures can deduce what it is, but at the same time, some may have questions. If I missed a sticky - I apologize (mod's please delete this post)... ...
do the Japanese pump air into there mud ponds ? is it necissary to have air pumping 24 hours a day while koi are in the pond ? How long do people usually leave koi in the mud pond before harvesting ? just summer ? over winter ? 1 year ? what would be a suffisiant size mud pond for about 50...

I've got thousands of bugs in my mud pond which I also have koi fry in. I know they are eating the fry as I have watched them do it. Does any one have any suggestions on how to get these bug numbers down? The bug in the highest numbers is one I think is called a common backswimmer. Sits at the...
Hey everybody. I am building a mudpond in the woods behind my house and I am worried about leaves. Do they make mudpond nets? Where could I find one of these? It is relatively long and skinny so I could possibly have a couple right next to each other?
I have been lurking here for a while, registered last month, really enjoying this site and thought I could post a question here. I am currently growing out a tank of showa koi fry I won from Buck's County Koi in a contest on a different forum. They are indoors in my fish room for the winter (I...
We moved to a house that has a pond (approx, 150X100). The previous owners let the pond grow wild and on one side it has trees. Of course, over the years the pond bottom had turned into 1-2 feet of muck. Last year we have someone come in and remove a good amount of the muck and dug an area deeper...
Hey everybody I am building a mudpond in the back hidden inside the woods. It will be about thirty by fourty and in an L shape. I want to raise new fry from my doitsu koi spawn in the spring and hold some oF my current store stock over the winter. How many 5 inch koi would I be able to put in...

We have a mud pond about 50x100x4 deep and will ice over in winter. Does any one have any ideas how to keep a hole open for the gases to escape? We lost some big koi a couple of years ago. A stock tank heater doesn't seem to work. Have tried throwing a lot of rock salt in one area but...
I have been reading through the mud pond section and havenot seen mention from anyone as to what size seine they plan to use to remove their tosai and fingerlings with. In looking at Japanese farms this has been a consideration for sure. As a retired fisheries biologist I started work doing...
My pond is +/ 90,000 gallons. I have roughly 54 koi of varying lengths. I have a fountain as well as an alita 80 compressor with two diffusers running. The center is 6-7 feet deep with the average depth of maybe 4 feet deep. I use Blue Bayou from Tractor Supply because I'd rather look at blue...
Here are some pictures of the mud pond dig that started here today.. It wil be 35x60x6.. About 95000 gallon.. We should be finished up are 4pm tomorrow.. Removing the top soil and starting the keyway..
do any of you mud ponders go through a specific treatment for koi when removing them from the mud? IE: chemical treatments to either new tank or individual dips?
I need some expertise and after reviewing this and several message boards I have not seen anyone talk about what I am thinking about doing (it may be because it will not work). First, the pond is a former wet area in my yard. Previously, the "wet" are was 2 to three times bigger than the pond. I...
Hi All; I live on a 20 acre clear water shallow gravel pit lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill and yellow perch some 125' from the house. Presently, I building a 300' watercourse thru the backyard and will be pumping up some 5000 gph of lake water to a top 10'x10' overflow lined pond....

I have a few acres I would like to put a pond or two on. How any gallons per koi should I allow. I was planning a depth of ten feet and hoping for eight after it is all said and done. The pond closest to the house must be "pretty" or the gig is up. Other than that is there a shape or size I...

As soon as the weather drie's up a bit we are gonna mover the dozer in here and get started.. Right now the ground is soaked.. We are suppose to get more rain this wee and then I think we will have a break in the weather (FINGURES CROSSED) I would like for everyone to chime in on this.. Tell me...
Pond is shaped and nearly to the 8' depth required. Dam is leveled and top soil put back around pond edges. getting some surface runnoff, too wet to finish grading.
Top soil pushed aside, pond shaped and started to dig out clay which will be used to form a road across a boggy bit. Last 2 images show we have reached blue clay which is being pulled up to sides to form dam.
Started at last, the ground is only just workable but able to break ground. These pics show day1 where the 20' x 40' pond is marked out, top soil removed and the core for the dam is dug.
With all the rain we have had plus now melting snow even a fairly large pond gets a good water change. 2nd pic shows the grassy area at the end of the pond where we are going to have a bog pond dug,(if it ever gets dry enough) this is an area that floods into the main pond when it rains, so we...
would like to ask what others use to seed mud pond for fry? I use chicken manure 10 days before spawning. Have heard others have use cottonseed meal, anything else that works?
Sorry folks I,m sure this question has been asked umpteen times but I cant remember where. In a mud pond how many gallons per fish would you recomend for good growth/health etc. Thanks.
We are planning to add another pond/s and at first thought was to have a 50' x 30' x 6' dug (within our budget). Now we are thinking that we might do better to have 2 smaller ones, say 25' x 30' which would givs us more flexibility. Our main aim is to be able to spawn in our big pond on mats etc...
Hi again, i have put my this year koi in a fish cage floating in my large pond. It is 4'x4'x12' using framing and 1/8 inch netting. Will they do ok this winter here in Virginia. The pond has frozen over pretty thick in the past but not every year. Is the 4' depth deep enough for them to stay warm...
I have noticed a Heron paying visits to our mud pond and although the fish are at the bottom right now I want to discourage visits later on when the fish are more active. The sides of the pond are at about 30to40 degrees so that may save any real bother? Does anyone have an effecient deterent...
just recently i dug our mud pond... we had decided to keep it exposed to the mud then to add a liner... BUT NOW...... i noticed there are quite a few crawdad "homes" in it. should i add a liner? because i planned on placing 200+ 2-3" koi from blackwater in there. i was wondering if...
I have read that the best clay to line a mud pond with is Sodium Bentonite clay. But I am also told that you end up with a thick, mucky bottom that will suck the shoe off your foot if you step in the pond. Is this right? and if so is there a better alternative to Sodium bentonite clay?
What is the recommended set up for a pump feeding a waterfall from a mud pond? I’m wanting to install an external pump for supply to a waterfall I’m building and I’m at sticking point on how the pond intake should be set up including depth, fish guard, etc. I also wonder if a pre filter is...
Hi, I need some expert advice. I had an April spawn, its now November and i still have quite a number of that spawn about 1-2" long and some even smaller. Others are 3-5". Am i wasting my time on trying to raise the small ones? They are in 55 gallon aquariums and quite crowded but doing well other...
Can koi coexist with bass, perch and a long necked nutria?
What would be the smallest size mud pond anyone would put in and still have it to where the fish would be healthy and gain good size? I have 3 acres behind the house and have been considering doing a small dig, maybe 30 x 12 x 7 deep. I though for airation I would put in a fountain for know. I...

Just had to change my liner in Indiana. Worried about my koi, 12 to 24 inches. I wonder if any algea will grow this winter, the koi always eat on it during the winter on the old liner.
Im in the process of costructing my pond and intend to use bentonite clay as a sealer as my area is 100% fine sand and it appears that this should do the trick.I was reading on the MSU wildlife and fisheries web site{www.msucares.com} that a dispersing agent such as sodium chloride or common salt...
I don't have a mud pond. I wanted to see if it would be feasible to create a small, simple one first before trying to build one next summer. I live in St Lawrence County in NY. When we dug for an above ground pool we noticed that rain water would take days to drain (the hole was about 2 feet...
Hi, I've had a 1/2 acre pond for 15 years no problem until last year it started to leak about 50 yards away, the pond is elevated. I wonder if anyone has used bentonite clay to try and stop the leak while the pond is still full. I've read where you can sprinkle the bentonite on the surface anyone...
Here are some pics of our mud pond some months on and quite a lot of rain later. When we had the pond dug it was at the end of 3 dry years for East TN, this year has made up for that (and then some!) After a couple of days of steady rain the run off into the pond can last up to a week with a steady...
I aerate my mud ponds during the three warm months, turn off the air when the temps drop to fifty. the ponds are 10-12 feet deep, average 300,000 gallons. i've been told to aerate when the air is warmer than the water, shut it off when the water is warmer than the air. i've been told not...
Hey everybody I am just now wanting to build myself a pond and observe the wildlife that uses it. I have done some reading on the subject and am now quite certain that I would like to use sodium bentonite clay to seal the bottom of my pond. I would like to know where I can get this clay. I would...
Thought I'd show a couple photos of the small mud pond I just started. Travis
Please help me figure out what size air pumps I need for my two, under-construction mud ponds. I have a 1/8 acre mud pond in construction now. It is a long skinny lima bean shape. 140 x 40 x 10-12 ft. deep. What size air pump do I need? Also on the drawing board for this month (if the ground...
The sketch on the aerial photo is roughly the placement of the new pond. the smaller circle is the spring which we were unable to incorporate because it was on a shale bed. however, the spring is making a nice little stream, other springs are filling the pond from the bottom, and we are landscaping...

Just a few more, not a champion among them but we love everyone.
Six forty-five EST, pond is pulled. The objective was to drain the pond, rehome non-koi fish, clean the pond as well as possible in short time frame, refill the pond with reduced fish load and reduced bacteria load. We captured all of the koi. Five of the 40 had small ulcers and are in QT. The...
