I just saw an ad from Webbs Water Gardens and they have it - I wondered if it would help my new pond cycle faster so that I can get the fish into the water before the water gets too cold to cycle. Any constructive suggestions, opinions are welcome.

I've always heard how it's not if but when you will forget to turn off the city water when refilling your pond. Well my day finally came today after almost 4 years of never forgetting. I always use a timer so I won't forget. Today it went off and I needed just a little more water so I left it running. Normally I reset the timer but before I did I had a visitor knocking at the door and I totally got side tracked. Luckily I remembered after about 1.5 hrs and ran to the backyard to find the pond overflowing but all koi still swimming. I got lucky this time, time to setup a backup timer.

Hi

Now that we are having a beautiful fall day today I was wondering what I need to do when wintering my little puddle.

I realize that we do not get freezing temps that much here and snow every 20 years but i still would like to keep the pond healty during the winter months.

I do know that soon the fishies will be not active and not require much food if at all.
Do I turn off my UV lamp? Do I keep what little plants I have in the pond even though they are turning brown? Do i keep the filter running as usual and air stones ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks !!

I have two bottom drains wth screw off lids with air bladders.

Besides having WAY too many fish they are tearing up and eating any plant they can find right now. The iris and pickerel rush leaves get into the BDs and get hung around the center tube where the lid screws into.
So I have to get in and unscrew those lids and clean out those drains.
Now once I get those lids off it's nearly impossible to get them back on .....without going under water. I ain't stickin my head under fish water.

Got any ideas for making a handle of some kind that I can attach to the lid but is easily removed after getting the lid screwed on?

We thought of using a garden rock rake and maybe a piece of liner made to be used as a rubber band. BUT I'd have to make sure I pulled that band off the correct direction.

I was also thinking about something like a huge tong, pair of pliers, pooper scooper, scissors, etc.
Huge tongs would be great. Just not sure how to do this.
Wooden ones? Metal? PVC?

We've not paid any attention to the upper pond with all the work needed elsewhere so this came as a bit of a surprise. The neighbors daughter came over and told us she saw tadpoles in the upper pond. Didn't surprise us because we've had so many frogs hopping around.

As it turns out there are small fry everywhere in the upper pond. They're about 1/2-3/4" long. They're a mixture of colors. Some black, grey, gold, yellow, some even have spots on them.

So I have a couple of questions. First, how did they (eggs or fry) get past the S/G filters? And second, how can I tell if they're goldfish or koi?

How can this happen so fast? I only put the fish in the pond about 2-3 weeks ago.

My Saki Sanke was awarded Best Male and Best in Variety

We had such a super show! The BassPro venue was the best in 8 years! The weather was the best the summer, low humidity, low a.m. temps (about 60) with highs in the upper 80's and lower 90's.

What fantastic koi were brought to the show! The great folks that came along with them, and the teamwork of the club setting up and tearing down the show. You can see at our website how we (Duc aka AZNGOPHER) christened the owner of the GC of the show.

I will try to start a thread with the pics of all the trophy winners when they are posted on the DKKG website.

The Baby GC was purchased at the show from one of the vendors. It was bred by Lake Eleven Koi Farm in OK. It was chosen by an 8 year old girl that knew nothing about koi. Robert the dealer had bowled 4 Kikusui for the grandmother to look at and she was going to choose a different one but the granddaughter said NO! she wanted this one! Goes to show that a good fish is recognized by even an untrained eye. The judges said that the choice of Baby GC was totally unanimous! They said that it would be very hard to find a koi of this quality in Japan, they couldn't say enough good things about this little koi. It was a Kikusui. This little koi went home with 4 awards! Can't wait to post pics of the Baby GC!
