There's nothing in the pond (this is the only thing that's stopping them, I think) and I've been tossing the idea around of throwing a few spawning mops in there a few days before I move them to the Big Pool, so I don't have to deal with the nasty water and get my first group of fry to raise. Think it'll work or are they just being weird?

Ok, this is probably going to rattle a few cages, however ever since I became involved in the 'Koi fraternity' this has bothered me.

Why do people think it is OK to breed their very average, and in some cases quite sub-standard, 'pond mutts'? I just don't get it. If you breed 'pond mutt' to pond mutt, you will invariably get (wait for it!!)... pond mutts! :uggg:

These are the people that purchased a few pet Koi with no original intent of breeding from them - then suddenly decide 'Ohhh I'll breed from them!' And it is usually by people who post asking... What variety is my cute pet Koi that I want to 'breed' from??!! (And this is usually met with very few replies because the answer is... pond-mutt-variety).

I will stress here, I'm not talking about the people who intentionally set about to purchase thought-out breeding stock, with a definite aim and direction of improving, or producing 'better' than the parent Koi.!

I have found that there is a distinct lack of thought and responsibility by a lot of Koi 'pet owners' (putting it a little harshly, maybe) when it comes to breeding Koi

Thousands and thousands of 'mutt babies' are produced in a single 'breeding'... many killed (culled) and most appear to end up in 'pet shops' or given away. This then just perpetuates the 'breeding' of poor quality Koi as these poor quality Koi flood the market (which is a jolly small market anyway!).

This reduces the number of homes available to the 'good quality' Koi because the 'average hobbyists' pond are already over-stocked with Koi crap... er... I mean Koi carp!

This in turn, puts pressure on people trying really hard to 'improve' the breed by learning, researching, spending a bucket load of money on quality stock (or the very best they can, given the state of Koi in their country), feed and conditions to raise and keep their fry and Koi because of 'over supply', the price plummets for their 'quality' Koi.

Consequently, it also creates a situation where-by the 'market' is just plain flooded with 'mutts', it becomes harder and harder to find good quality 'pet Koi'.

Are these the same people that think it is Ok to let their cute little mixed breed dog (bitza-mutt) breed with next doors mutt, just because it will have 'cute' puppies or because they can't be bothered having them de-sexed... or fenced in properly? Or allow their moggie cat to have litter after litter of kittens... just because?

I understand that Koi in a pond will breed with no help or encouragement from us! This again, is not the point of this 'rant' as this just cannot reasonably be controlled by the average 'pet' owner. This is a 'rant' directed at those that deliberately and knowingly decide to 'breed' their pond-mutts.

Am I being to judgmental and harsh? Maybe I am, however I can think of no other breeding situation where it is perceived as OK to breed sub-standard animal to sub-standard animal and get a round of applause for it.

Whew...so excited, had to share with fellow koi-fanatics!! Last week my mom's koi spawned on floating hyacinths. I put the plants in her bog area for the eggs to hatch. However, the weather got really cold and I wasn't able to get the plants inside......I watched them for about 5 days after the eggs were laid...nothing. So I just figured they weren't going to hatch. But I noticed yesterday, there were babies!!! Not very many...I just saw about 20. I know there's probably alot more I couldn't see. So I put some brine shrimp eggs in the bog area....mostly where I was seeing babies. These were unplanned babies, so they will probably grow up in the pond.....but I'm so excited to have gotten any from this batch!! I'm definately ready to start spawning the rest of my fish next week...looking forward to a big batch of babies!!! YEAH!!!!!:yahoo::cheer:

So I just moved my fish into my first aquaponics system tote, and noticed one of my fish was rather "overweight." I'm pretty sure she's ready to release some eggs shortly. I've noticed that a number of the other larger koi in the tank have been chasing her relentlessly. I am trying desperately to get the other three tanks connected so that I can seperate her and the other Ochiba and Chagoi as I believe they may both be male. I am going to try to pick up a mop head today to try to give them some "spawning ropes" and then I will need to try to grow some daphnia if I can get them moved before a major flock spawning happens and all the eggs get eaten. I'd love any pointers or suggestions you may have to try to be as successful as possible. I'm a MAJOR amateur, so I'm sure I'll lose a number of the fry even if I get to that point, but I'd like to be as prepared as possible.
