Gardening in Straw Bales is one of the more recent gimmicks. Always willing to try things once I am giving it a shot this year in the back garden by the cherry tree. So far I am rather underwhelmed. While you can definitely grow stuff in bales, so far doing so is way more work with much slower growth than growing in the ground or containers for me.

The process is to first prep the bales. This was about a month of bale saturation plus adding organic amendments to increase their fertility. Then you plant. I have already had to fertilize twice since planting which is two times more than what I've down with plants in the ground. I'm trialing tomatoes, melons, cukes, sweet peppers and a mexibell bell pepper (think size of a sweet with a bit o heat). Performance thus far.

Cukes: HATE it. Not growing, being attacked by pill bugs.
Tomatoes: Growing but not as fast or lush as plants in the ground. Despite 2x the fertilization.
Melons: Honeydew-not growing, not dying. Watermelon: Seems to be shrinking.
Peppers: They seem to be growing possibly a little faster than the ground plants. This makes sense since their feet are warmer.

I have heirloom potatoes growing in a pile of yard waste (not remotely composted) in the center. They are doing very well so far.

My early verdict on this method is that if your ground is horrible and you hate containers, this might be a route. However if your soil is great, this isn't going to make you smile. I'll updated as the summer goes on. Also, if you are into a nice looking garden, this...is not. LOL
The first one has a red rose that her boyfriend had picked off one of her bushes and stuck it into a cluster on mine to see if I would notice it. There are hundreds of blooms and just as many more buds. I rooted these from a bush that I got from my MIL after she had passed away. They are so easy to root and no trouble what so ever to care for.. I had to put up the water cannon scarecrow to keep the donkey from eating them. He loves them but he hates to get wet. I have 3 beside the house, but I am going to root some more this summer. Looks like I'll have plenty of weeding to do when I get home.

A friend of mine showed me a Poppy Garden she made in her yard. I never realized
there were so many varieties of Poppies. How long will they flower? Are they just
for a short time? I would love to put some in, but maybe I should wait until the Fall?
Or is Spring a better time to plant them?

I bought a Cherry Dazzle Crape Myrtle today. Only True Red Dwarf Crape Myrtle.

Here is the info:

The Cherry Dazzle Crape Myrtle, is a dwarf crape myrtle,
growing to a maximum height and width of only 5 feet.
That means you can plant it in even the small spaces of your garden!

In the spring, the foliage is a bronze-tinted green. Summer brings darker green foliage and explosions of bright red clusters of blossoms. As the blooms fade in the fall, the foliage “shows off” as the leaves turn a brilliant reddish-orange. Three different looks, each season bringing a different kind of beauty to transform your garden.

The Cherry Dazzle Crape Myrtle is disease resistant, drought resistant, and it grows well in most areas of the country, as long as the winter temperatures don’t fall below ten degrees.

I have just the spot for it too.:D: I will plant it tomorrow. Here is a pic I found of one.
Any one here have one of these?

This is a shot of my knock-out rose with spiderwort in the background by my plant pond:

This is my rose garden but the sun is directly on it so the picture isn't very good:

This is "Scentimental" - one of my most aromatic roses:

This one is called "Love":

And last but not least - I have a resident for the first time in my bird house!
Can't see anything inside but I saw the mother bird making the nest so I assume there are eggs or babies inside if nothing has gotten them.
