This is my first experience with spawnings. Do koi continue to breed all summer? Or do they spawn only once in the spring when the water warms up?
We had a couple of 100 degree days here and the water temps went up to about 80+. Noticed some more activity yesterday morning (chasing and messing up plants....) Had some pretty substantial foam on the pond this morning....

Is this another spawning? No fry visible from the first obvious spawning a month ago....

I only get one spawn per female per season. I think the shorter summer and cooler weather in the PNW compared to, say, Florida, may effect how many times they spawn. My Koi started spawining last month. I usually dont see babies grow up because my fish eat them. If there is anything that could damage the fish take it out of your pond. I have had fish bing themselfs on lily pots. You will know if they are spawning, they will chase each other very fast and splash alot. I have noted that mine usually spawn in early A.M. It helps to have water hyacinth or water lettus for them to spawn on.My first spawn occured after a large water change.

This must be where the Oregonians hang out!

Have any of you been to Bandon before? I grew up there back in the 80s.

There are some famous Japanese breeders that get two spawns a season from some of their females. They use a certain technique to fool the girls.

I have heard of koi spawnign in the Fall, but I suspect those females didn't spawn the previous spring.

also not every female will spawn every spring. This last spring I only had one of my females develop eggs.....the rest.......nutin honey

Maybe they were not spawning, the activity was alot like when they were definately spawning, just not as frenzied. Maybe just a little playing around in the nice warm water? Sure was a lot of new foam under the waterfall for
some reason (not a water quality problem, recent water change....)

I'll keep an eye out for any fry this year. This was their first try anyhow, they have a lot of learning to do....

Bandon is one of the most beautiful spots on the Oregon Coast. Been a while since I've been down there....Hummmm, a weekend at the beach....sounds like a good idea....

If the females do not spawn, sometimes they will absorb their eggs back into their bodies.

I just got back from Bandon. Had some fish & chips for lunch and went to a few art galleries.

Every year it's different with my koi. Some years they spawn once or twice in spring. Some years they spawn on and off all summer. One year none of them spawned that we know of. I think that was the year 2002. My koi do not eat their fry and now that they're getting large they ignore most of the eggs as well. We always have plenty of fry around to sell and trade.

Glad you agree. I grew up around 4 blocks from an ocean path....we moved when I was 8 to North Bend, but I remember Bandon very well, and plan to take a trip there with my wife and daughter (now 2.5 months old), in a couple of years....probably when she is 5.

awesome. I am very very jealous. Have you ever been to the botanical gardens several miles north of Bandon? I have some pretty fond memories of that place.

Oh for the time and money to go.....
